Samsung Electronics and Toshiba launched tablets to challenge Apple’s iPad as leading consumer electronics maker said they could also compete with Apple on content, services and a greater range of devices. Samsung has revealed that the Galaxy Tab is a tablet with a 7-inch screen weighing just 380gr and running the latest version of Google’s Android operating system.
Toshiba will also run Android but weighs twice as much, at 760g, and has a 10.1-inch screen. Toshiba is treating it more like its computers and will sell it direct to consumers, but a 3G option means carriers may also offer the device. The iPad weighs 730g and has a 9.7-inch screen. Apple offers Wi-Fi only and 3G versions, with a special data contract available through AT&T in the US.
A tablet must have content and services ready through its Qriocity online service that would distinguish it from the competition. Toshiba declares its Market services for consumers to share their own content and consume movies and music. It will be available across its products, from a TV set-top box to the new tablet. Samsung has not announced pricing details, but the Toshiba tablet will be available in the UK from October for £329 ($506) including VAT.
